Welcome to the ASTROTROP Project

We are pleased to announce the final ASTROTROP Conference will be held in Leeds, 23/24 February 2016

Utilizing Virtual Observatory Technology to Improve the Frequency and Coverage of Tropical Forest Monitoring

ASTROTROP is an innovative project, funded by the STFC CLASP initiative, in which astronomers and global change scientists will collaborate for the first time. It will enable members of the TROPGLOBE network of tropical forest scientists to demonstrate the feasibility of key functions of a Pan-Tropical Forest Observatory, in which large area digital maps of forest area can be combined with digital maps of biodiversity, carbon and other forest attributes, to give maps of multiple forest attributes that can be analysed and shared with scientific users via the World Wide Web. Software already developed and used by members of the AstroGrid and Euro-VO network will be adapted so that these maps can appear in combined form on the desktop computers of users. The project will also initiate a dialogue between astronomers and global change scientists, and develop new commercial products to give UK industry a world lead in global and national observatory technology.

  • Visit the About section to learn more about the project, including the project deliverables, milestones, and plan.
  • The Background section explains why we are doing this, and gives more information on tropical forest monitoring and the Virtual Observatory idea.
  • The Internal section is intended for internal project collaboration. It requires a member login.
  • The Outputs section is a repository for technical reports and software, also records of Past meetings.
